Mississippi River Trip: Recovering

The day after the Demmick Island. . .well landing really isn't the word. . .we needed some time to dry out our stuff and reorganize.  Larisa took a water level and we found that it was still rising.  We dried everything that needed drying, repacked, and generally explored the island.  It's mainly bugs and a colony of beavers, but still pretty.

The next morning we headed south again, this time stopping near Elk River to make some phone calls.  The incident at Demmick had given us pause, so we made a bunch of phone calls, starting with the locks and dam personnel, some of the USGS folks, and chatted up a bunch of locals.

As things stand now, the dams from St. Cloud down to lock 6 will be open for the foreseeable future.  The currents near the dams aren't something you want to be in when the river isn't flooded, so there's no way to safely continue the trip.

Long story short, we pulled off the river to re-plan our journey and look at some other options.  I'm writing this entry in Fairfax after a 30 hour bus trip from Minneapolis and will hop in the car to collect Larisa, who is camping at the Rice Creek Chain of Lakes park and waiting for me to get back.  After that we hope to hit either the Boundary Waters Canoe Area or Quetico for a few days of canoeing/camping.  After that we'll find an internet cafe and look for another place to go, leapfrogging our way towards home as we go.

You'll know when we know. . .
