We decided to keep the rental car one extra day and then went driving around to find a place to put in that didn't look as scary as the St. Paul Dam area. We found it about a mile downstream and were judging whether to give the river another day, and decided not to...so we put in and started downstream.
The river is moving FAST. We went down to a canoe camping area called Boy Scout Point and camped there -it inly took a coule of hours including a brief stop to reassess how the canoe was packed. We got up the next morning with the expectation that we would hit either Oak Island or a campground further down near Monticello. All in all we did 18 miles in about four hours including a stop for lunch at Oak Island and camped at a Monticello city park.
We leave in about an hour for Dimmick Island to camp for at least one day, perhaps two. A local here told us that two dams upstream are fully open, so we might see more water in the next day or two, hence the possible wait to put in again.
Weather has been gorgeous, though the nights are very cold for Larisa. Both the night before last and this morning she migrated her way over to my mattress to "keep me company" (get warm).
We'll post again when we find civilization!
